Redesign multimodal mobility systems more efficiently
IMPACT analyzes the effects of various measures in the transport sector on the mobility behaviour of humans, who usually act emotionally and not rationally. The willingness to change from the usual decision-making habits is examined on the basis of social milieus, using the newly developed SP-off-RP survey tool. This allows a much more realistic view of all factors that cause a change in the transport system – pricing, parking space management, shared mobility, new public transport lines, road construction and new technologies such as automated driving – than with conventional approaches. By means of simulation environments and models, realistic scenarios are developed. Thus, a sound basis for decision-making is created for the selection of suitable measures, which contribute to the optimization and increase in efficiency of the overall traffic system.

Low Carbon and Low Carbon Vanadium (LCV) grooved rails: the best options for city transport
Use of Low Carbon and Low Carbon Vanadium (LCV) rails, with the addition of very small amounts of Vanadium provides an increased grain refinement throughout the entire rail and not just the outer surface (as rolled HH rails). This technique results in increased hardness and elongation compared to rails in grade R200, but with even lower carbon content. Also, thanks to the higher strain and grain refinement, after only six months of service, track hardness readings increases up to 30-45 HBW due to the strain hardening produced by wheel/rail interaction. Wheels do a smooth grinding on softer steel rails, helping to self-maintain embedded tracks, avoiding any Rail Contact Fatigue or head checks. In addition, since rolling stock wheels are associated with lower speed and low axle weight, the actual wheels do a smooth grinding on softer steel rails, helping to self-maintain embedded tracks, avoiding any Rail Contact Fatigue or head checks.

Clean without any residue
Trains and buses being out of service cost money. The dry ice mobile cleaning for electric control boxes from Benway Industrial Services reduces outage durations thus saving time and money because the electric boxes do not have to be dismantled. The dry ice pellets (CO2) are blasted onto the surface as solid material becoming gaseous then. The advantage of dry ice cleaning is that it is electrically non-conducting. Therefore, the electric control boxes can be cleaned safely and quickly. Dry ice cleaning is thorough, safe for surfaces and environmental-friendly since no aggressive detergents are needed. After the cleaning process, the dry ice evaporates completely. The mobile service teams are available at the bus and train depots within Germany in a minimum of time.
Platform edge with integrated noise protection function
Noise protection elements have been installed along the edge of the 220-metre-long platform at the stop in Töging am Inn as part of modernisation work of the Südostbayernbahn (Southeast Bavarian Railways). The platform edges absorb the noise directly at the source and the integrated wood concrete absorbers protect against unpleasant noise even in confined spaces. With structured surfaces and wave-like forms, wood concrete with a tested lifetime of more than 50 years is perfect for sound absorption. The solid concrete supporting trays have a high bulk density and therefore have very good sound absorption properties of up to 47 dB. The highly absorbent platform edge has been designed especially for use at railway stops and stations and, after the Vienna Central Train Station, has been used in Töging for the first time in Germany. A milestone in track construction: The Rolling Modular System
The Rolling Modular System is a milestone in the logistics of track construction: Patented innovations optimize the material flow and significantly improve productivity. At the same time, the modular structure and integrated operating concept of the train unit provide for a lean yet flexible vehicle fleet. Track construction commonly requires substantial investment in machinery. Even for smaller projects, at least two train units are used as a rule. The Rolling Molular System re-arranges the work processes: The capability of transporting bulk material and excavated earth in opposite directions means that the innovative machines can carry out three work steps in a single pass and with no passing siding. A second and third (ballasting) train unit is unnecessary, idle times are shortened. The core component of the modular system is the E-MT 100 material transport wagon, which can transport up to three materials in any direction simultaneously. One of the most important extension tools is the BE 8-16 loading and unloading wagon.
Slackless railway coupler connection
Bhilai Engineering Corporation (BEC) is presenting a slack-adjusted drawbar and coupler connection. With the increased loads carried by today's trains, it is important to maintain close butted relationships between draft components to lessen impact forces under buff conditions and sudden pulling forces under draft conditions. Since most drawbar and coupler parts are cast with little or no finish machining to provide dimensional control, it is preferable to have a coupling device that is self-adjusting under various wear conditions to lessen the slack in such connections. The advanced foundry technology with AAR and ISO certification ensures BEC coupling systems meet global standards. SPM and appropriate gauges are the primary requirement for achieving successful assembly, including interchange.

The easiest, quickest and most economical solution to determine wire lengths in control cabinet wiring: The first step is that a customer orders a wiring unit with standard lengths, whereas each wrap-around label includes a bar code printed on the B-side. Wiring bundle is installed in the first control cabinet. During wiring, the excess lengths are cut off, scanned and measured in WirePicker based on the data collected, the wiring list is corrected. Even huge lists of 1,000 wires can be measured within the shortest period of time. Every further wire bundle is then delivered at the exact length required. It doesn’t get any easier! Wire Picker by CadCabel isn’t only optimal for the smallest of series starting from a count of two, but also for larger series/variants, WirePicker can be optimally implemented in connection with the variant generator.

Tram tracks are a problem for cyclists. In order to reduce the risk of accidents, Dätwyler has developed a velosafe track, which prevents wheel seizing in the rail groove. Pedestrians also benefit from it as it is less likely to twist an ankle. Dätwyler achieves this by screwing a safety profile into the rail groove. A track guiding plate restricts the sine curve of the track wheel and thereby increases the lifetime of the rubber profile. The entire construction can be removed at any time and without much work, for example to perform rail work. The groove has a draining channel in order to completely rinse it, so dust and dirt do not build up in the groove. With the newly developed RAILRESTORE, Dätwyler is presenting another innovation. With this, one can eliminate rail breaks in shortest possible time at highest level.

Vacuum toilet system with condition based maintenance
Dowaldwerke introduces a vacuum toilet system for rail vehicles with condition based maintenance. While conventional systems have to undergo a service according to a fixed schedule as defined by the manufacturer, maintenance for the new system is carried out according to the real condition of critical components. This system detects the condition of system components by analysing the pressure curve appearing during a special flushing procedure for diagnosis. This diagnostic flushing triggers the relevant components in a specific way and is independent from the normal flushing procedure. By evaluating the pressure curve, the control software detects the optimum point in time for a service and recommends a service in advance of this point of time. In case the service staff follows this recommendation, service is only performed if required regarding to the effective condition of the system. This is the basic difference compared to a conventional toilet system, which has to go through service according to a fixed maintenance schedule.

3-in-1: the Rectiverter
The Eltek Rectiverter is a completely new concept in power conversion. It combines the functionality of a rectifier, an inverter and a static transferswitch in only one bidirectional power module. The concept is very simple: 3 appliances in 1 module. The Rectiverter has three ports - AC input, AC output and one bidirectional DC port for both input and output. During normal operation, the Rectiverter provides both AC and DC power with a total load of up to 2,000 W per module. The AC input is rectified, then fed to a built-in inverter for AC output. The rectified AC input is fed to a DC/DC converter for appropriate DC load output, and to batteries for charging. In case of AC (mains) failure, the DC flow is reversed from the batteries to feed the inverter for conversion to AC, and to take over the DC load. The transition from AC to DC feed is instantaneous and with no load disturbance!

New connectivity for the rail industry
The connectivity specialist ESCHA extends its “rail approved” product range by new components. In addition to the rail-specific products for data transmission (ETB and ECN) and sensor-/actuator-wiring, ESCHA shows overmolded M12x1-connection- and junction-cables for power supply as well as sensor-/actuator-connectors in M8x1-housing style for the first time. As it is the case with all “rail approved” products, the new components meet the rail specific and relevant standards DIN EN 45545-2 and DIN EN 50155. In order to accommodate the individual rail requirements, ESCHA does not specify any standard cable lengths and supplies inch-perfect. In addition to kitting, labeling, and further services ESCHA offers, upon request, M12x1 grip bodies with thread. The thread allows a protective hose to be pulled over the cable. The protective hose protects the cable against damage by stone chip and pollution on exteriors.
The latest generation of Switch Inspection and Measurement (SIM) vehicles
Eurailscout´s latest generation of Switch Inspection and Measurement (SIM) vehicles is fulfilling high output demands. The complete rail profile is measured every 20 mm up to 60 km/h (40 mm at higher speeds). This accuracy of the measured profiles allows turnout geometry parameters like gauge, check gauges and flangeway gaps to be calculated in compliance with the EN13848 standard, as well as quantifying verticalhorizontal rail head wear and rail inclination with good reproducibility. Virtual gauge calibre measurements make it possible to apply conventional safety assessments under loaded circumstances. Together with track geometry parameters and video inspection complete assessments of turnouts can be made using Eurailscout’s SIM.

Special FIP solutions for railroad technology ensure fire protection and highest mechanical and dynamic load capacity. This protects cables and wires inside and outside the train.
Proof of strength for driverless passenger transport system
The INNOVIA APM 300 driverless passenger transport system by Bombardier Transportation will be introduced at Munich airport. To obtain operational acceptance and regulatory approval, the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliabiity LBF prepared a proof of strength for the bogies with particular reference to local operating conditions. This enabled the manufacturer to precisely define the very specific operating specifications and provide proof of durability for the entire assembly under exactly these conditions in a test designed especially for this purpose. All load assumptions and the service life requirement had to be defined from the ground up. No standards existed that Fraunhofer LBF could use either for the measurement concept or the strength test.

Airborne Profiler, Clearance Profile Scanner and Framework for 3D-Data Interpretation
The Lightweight Airborne Profiler LAP was developed by Fraunhofer IPM for application on airborne platforms. Local orientation of the LAP is based on a combination of IMU (inertial measurement unit) and GNSS (global navigation satellite system). The system is especially appropriated for shaded and complex structures. The CPS sensor is mounted at the inspection car's front. A rotating mirror projects a high frequency modulated laser beam on the surroundings and deflects the returning light for deflection and analysis. The CPS is based on phase shift measurement for determining the distance. Based on the CPS the railway and the surrounding can be monitored. Today, infrastructure is surveyed using cameras or laser scanners. The acquired data is generally evaluated manually. Fraunhofer IPM has developed a “Deep Learning Framework” which automates this process.

By integrating additional sensing modules, it generates even more information than established models, enabling additional and more efficient railway applications to be implemented. The sensor’s digital output and the ring architecture – based on a specifically developed bus system – hugely reduce the cabling requirements. With this innovation, Frauscher will again set a new benchmark in track vacancy detection.
SMC/BMC powder coating in the pressing tool
The powder coating of SMC/BMC using the Powder InMould Coating (PIMC) process can be easily integrated in the pressing process. The powder coating is sprayed into the pressing mould manually or automatically. The highly reactive coating hardens in a few seconds so the SMC/BMC can be laid in immediately and pressed. The cycle time is only extended by the duration of the powder coating application (depending on the component, approx. 30 seconds). After pressing in a single work step (without laborious subsequent coating), the finished, coated component can be demoulded as usual. The typical fibre marking is completely levelled out by the PIMC process, the parts are given a highly resistant and very homogeneous surface.

Modular UPS system for electronic interlocking systems
An interruption of the local network of electronic interlocking systems must not lead to a failure of the signalling technology. On electrified lines, the catenary network with 15 kV/16.7 Hz is used as a network substitute. This voltage prevails in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden and Norway. However, the loads expect a voltage of 50 Hz, as it comes from the local network. The world novelty UPS works with 3-phase, bidirectional UPS modules AGIL, fed from the transformed catenary voltage, and controlled smart bypasses, fed by the local network. A typical UPS, consisting of 4 AGIL modules, a smart bypass and manual bypass, provides 30 kVA/30 kW. The cabinet in which the UPS is housed has dimensions [WxHxD] of only 0.6 x 2 x 0.6 m. By juxtaposing a power of up to 320 kVA/320 kW can be achieved.

Low-jitter multi-channel hall-effect speed sensors with galvanic insulation
The multi-channel hall-effect speed sensor is available for 3-channel and 4-channel railway applications. The multi-channel speed sensor family (DSD 25) comprises of two galvanic separated circuits, each having up to two phase shifted square wave signals proportional to the rotary speed. They have three or four independent sensing elements consisting of magnetic biased differential hall-effect semiconductors with static behaviour (frequency down to 0 Hz). This lowers jitter and static characteristics that are extremely important for modern propulsion control systems. The versatility of these sensors means one can create different combinations for applications such as propulsion control, wheel slip protection (WSP) and signalling (ATP, ATC, TPWS, ECTS, CBTC). This can be a cost effective solution as applications can be combined for retrofit and upgrade cases.
Digital, rail certified accelerometer for train control
The DXA-100/200 is a rail certified, digital accelerometer that is typically embedded within passenger rail cars to relay acceleration data to the train’s controls. This is the primary source to the train’s automatic control system (i.e. CBTC – Computer Based Train Control). The sensor can be used for train automatic acceleration/deceleration control, track maintenance and rail to rail elevation determination as well as train performance testing applications. The DXA is CENELEC/AREMA certified, validating that it will perform up to or exceed all expectations within rail transportation applications. It includes a resolution to 8 µg with a measuring range from ±0.25 to ±2 g, in one or two axes, and RS485 or RS422 digital output options.
New turnouts for center guided vehicles
In the last decade, urban transport vehicles have been introduced in Europe with hybrid characteristics between a tram and a bus. The system consists of vehicles with pneumatic wheels guided through a central rail, and a metallic wheel system that clamps it. These central guidance systems need track devices, such as turnouts and diamond crossings. JEZ has developed turnouts and diamond crossings for this type of transport systems, integrating in them a switching engine, position detection and heating. The solution developed by JEZ consists of a rotary panel with main and branch rails, preferably made of Mn steel, Cam mechanisms at the entrance and exit of switches, with integrated locking system of the end positions and integration of the switching unit, locking and detection of the electrohydraulic engine UNISTAR HR inside the turnout or the diamond crossing.
Rubber-metal components with new fire protection system
Rubber-metal mounts are widely used in railway applications, especially in the bogie. Regarding fire protection, strict regulations apply here. The world premiered solution provides fire protection of the rubber body through heat shielding. The type of protection has no adverse effect on the mechanical properties of the components, it can be used with all rubber compounds. The shielding principle of Jörn is based on materials that expand in heat and so multiply their volume. Existing free spaces, such as free spring travel closed and the component encased thereby, mechanical properties are largely retained. Compared to other solutions there is no mechanical restriction of the rubber components; existing systems can also be retrofitted.
Proven JUMO measurement technology points the way ahead
JUMO meets the stringent requirements governing rail vehicles with an extensive portfolio of sensors and measurement transducers. For example, the thermostats used for climate monitoring are certified to DIN EN 50155, DIN EN 50121 and DIN EN 45545 and have a very long service life of about ten years (in normal operation). The various resistance thermometer models are also designed to withstand the harsh environmental conditions including in wheelset transmissions or axle bearings and can operate in temperature ranges from -50 to +260 °C. For pressure and level monitoring applications, JUMO also offers transmitters for monitoring the pressure in brake circuits or levels in wastewater tanks, for example. Here, measurements cover ranges from 0 to 40 mbar and from 0 to 16 bar differential pressure.

RFID rides the rail
The nationwide network of Kathrein UHF readers lays the foundation for cost savings as well as optimisation for logistics and maintenance. One of the main objectives of the system is to specifically track international freight wagons from the moment they cross the border in real time. In order to create a centralised pool for all data including the time stamp, ID and status, the RFID readers were intelligently linked to the backend – either wirelessly via WLAN bridges or using LAN cables. Data can be generated, analysed, filtered and cached in real time in the event of a network failure. Using the intelligent Kathrein RFID software, planning and process safety decisions can now be made more quickly and reliably. This significantly increases efficiency and optimal logistics planning along the entire value creation chain.
Two world premieres for more enhanced passenger comfort
IFE, the global market leader for rail vehicle entrance systems, is presenting two world firsts: A sliding door sealing system with improved acoustic insulation that enhances passenger comfort. Conventional seals only seal the doors’ front and rear edges. The new IFE sealing system has integrated a lifting mechanism into the standard closing operation. This raises the door leaf shortly before locking so that the top and bottom edges are sealed. Additional benefit in summer and in winter: It reduces the amount of hot or cold air forced into the vehicle by the headwind. At InnoTrans, IFE will be showcasing the sealing system as part of the S4 entrance system display. The other world premiere being presented by IFE is its new finger protection rubber that detects people or objects caught in the doors during boarding or alighting. When the system is triggered, it interrupts the start-up sequence, preventing the vehicle from setting off and thus improving passenger safety.

KORA predictive maintenance made easy
Track switches are the most critical part of the rail infrastructure and, until now, the hardest to monitor. Frequent manual inspections and premature replacement of healthy assets lead to higher maintenance costs, while unforeseen downtimes disrupt train operations. KORA by KONUX is an end-to-end solution which uses intelligent IoT sensors to monitor the condition of assets and identify and evaluate anomalies in the data using artificial intelligence. KORA recognizes possible failures in time and enables the corresponding scheduling of maintenance measures. This solution by KONUX makes predictive maintenance easy, reduces costs, prolongs the life of the assets and improves the availability of its customers' networks.
Inspection system for internal and surface rail defects
Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) inspection system is used to quantitatively determine the position, scope and direction of propagation of an inner rail defect. For a more accurate determination of the scope of the error, the rail is irradiated by phased array search units, each with different angles. The previous problems with defect detection in the dead zone are also now a thing of the past. The phased array ultrasonic testing also extends the life of the wedge. The Eddy Current Testing (ECT) inspection system is a multi-channel plus point sensor which is less sensitive to noise and lift-off. By applying an algorithm to determine the depth, width and length of the defect, surface errors on the rail head can be detected with greater accuracy. This inspection system gives the operator an optimal defect detection solution so that he can easily evaluate the condition of the rails.

Carbofol® in railway constructions
Geosynthetics are used in railway construction predominantly in the field of earthworks. Since November 2015 there is a new guideline “Technical requirements for geosynthetics in railway constructions (DBS 918 039)”, published by DB Netz AG. Within this new DBS 918 039 several geosynthetic applications and the corresponding technical requirements are defined. Besides the conventional applications there are also new applications like groundwater protection where geosynthetics are used. Geomembranes like Carbofol® work as a sealing underneath the railway track to protect groundwater e. g. in water protection areas.
Automatic simulation of primary shim plates on the bogie test stand
Anybody who is testing bogies knows: After shim plates for the compensation of the wheel loads, proposed by the test program, have been changed, the bogie will now react differently on the test stand. The load distribution is not correct anymore and the procedure starts again. The newly developed shim plate simulation on the Nencki bogie test stands enables the wheel supports for the wheel load measuring to be increased or decreased according to the calculated value of the shim plates. In this condition, a new load measuring follows. Afterwards the adjustment is repeated again, until the load distribution is correct. The operator now receives the final value of the shim plate thickness at a display and has to change them only once. This new function offers a great time saving during the adjustment and testing of bogies.
Auto Jog for automatic train alignment
The Auto Jog is used to perform automatic train alignment when a train fails to stop within the stopping tolerance limits after entering a platform. With coolants and digitalization on track for success
OELCHECK presents the OELCHECK-App and the coolant analysis at the InnoTrans 2018. With the App, operators and service employees enter the sample data directly at the machine. With a QR-Code attached to the sampling point, the App recognizes the machine with the corresponding data. Only changes in the sample data, e.g. time of use of the lubricant, need to be completed in the App. Errors that have occurred so far when manually filling out the paper information form or when transferring illegible handwritten data are now things of the past. With the coolant analysis which was introduced last year, OELCHECK makes statements about the coolant condition, water quality, impurities, degradation products and additives. From the test results, OELCHECK draws conclusions about the condition of the machine and the coolant.
